Round of 16 Day Two

Netherlands-Mexico 2-1 : It looked like Mexico would make it through to the Quarterfinals when they went ahead in the 48th minute after taking the ball away from a defender and rifling it into Dutch net, then holding on until late in the game.   The Netherlands equalized in the 88th minute on a rocket shot from Wesley Sneijder from outside.  The Dutch then won in the end with a stoppage time goal in the box on a questionable penalty drawn by Arjen Robben.   Klass-Jan Huntelaar converted the penalty for the Dutch win to send them on to the Quarterfinals.

Costa Rica-Greece 1-1 (5-3) : After a mild mannered first half, Costa Rica took the lead in the 52nd minute with a goal from Bryan Ruiz, assisted by Christian Bolanos.   Sokratis kept Greek hopes alive with a stoppage time goal at the end of normal time with a shot to the upper 90. No goals in the two overtimes made this game go to penalties.  Costa Rica went on to make all five of their penalties, while Gekas' was save in the fouth set.  Costa Rica went first in penalties, therefore it didn't matter what Greece did for their fifth.

Round of 16 Day One

Brazil-Chile 1-1(3-2) : Chile surprisingly dominated possession, 51%-49%, but Brazil opened the scoring with David Luiz scoring in the 18th minute on a corner kick.  Chile then scored in the 32nd minute to bring it even when Alexis Sanchez put in a right footed shot to the lower left corner of the goal, assisted by Eduardo Vargas.  Chile held on to send it into overtime, with neither team able to score.

Colombia-Uruguay 2-0 : James Rodriguez gave us a candidate for goal of the tournament with his goal in the 28th minute.  He chested a header from Abel Aguilar, then turned and smashed a volley into the roof of the goal from about 22 yards out.   James scored again in the 50th minute to send Colombia into the Quarterfinals.

Day Fifteen at the World Cup

Portugal-Ghana 2-1 : Portugal had a big goal differential to overcome in this game, ever since losing 0-4 to Germany in the first game.  They started their effort with a cross that was deflected into Ghanaian John Boye's own goal in the 31st minute.  Ghana equalized in the 57th minute with a goal from Asamoah Gyan, assisted by Kwadwo Asamoah.  Portugal went back on top in the 80th minute with a left footed shot from Christiano Ronaldo after Ghana's keeper pushed it right to his feet.

United States-Germany 0-1 :  With Ghana out of the picture, the USA only need to keep it close, and went on to the Round of 16 in spite of losing to Germany.  It was a fairly tame game, with the goal coming from Thomas Muller in the 55th minute following a corner kick.

Algeria-Russia 1-1 : Russia scored first with a goal from Alexander Kokorin in the 6th minute, a header from the middle of the box to the top left corner. Kokorin was assisted by Dmitriy Kombarov.   Islam Slimani equalized in the 60th minute on a header from close range, the assist going to Yaciime Brahimi.

South Korea-Belgium 0-1 : Jan Vertonghen scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute to put Belgium on top in Group H.  Belgium played the second half a player down after Stephen Dufour was sent off with a straight red after a fairly mild foul.
